The Cape Town Hebrew Congregation was founded in 1841 making it the oldest Congregation in South Africa and one of the oldest in the Southern hemisphere. It is regarded as the Mother Synagogue of South Africa and is a centre for community events and celebrations.

Our current Synagogue building, the 'Great Synagogue', is affectionately called the 'Gardens Shul' as it is situated within the Company Gardens just down Government Avenue and a short walk from Parliament. It is a historic landmark for both the Jewish and wider South African communities. The Synagogue building, visited by thousands of tourists annually, is an architectural masterpiece both inside and out and is widely regarded as one of the most magnificent Synagogues in the world.

We are a Mainstream Orthodox congregation offering beautiful Shul Services, spiritual enrichment as well as educational and social opportunities for all age groups in a warm, friendly communal atmosphere. We are a family Congregation where every Jew is welcome.

We offer full services from cradle to grave. We pride ourselves in our professionalism and personal attention both to detail and to the individual and every occasion held at our Shul is sure to be a memorable one. We also do our best to ensure that every congregant and visitor feels welcome in our Shul.

We have daily prayer services 365 days a year as well as a host of religious, social and educational programmes and activities. During the week Shacharit is followed by a short Shiur and there is also a short Shiur between Mincha and Maariv as well.

On Shabbat and Festivals we provide a full choral service and our Chazzan Ian Camissar and choir have drawn international acclaim for their memorable and uplifting services particularly over the High Holiday period.

A delicious Brocha is provided every Saturday morning following the service. All our food products are under strict Kosher supervision.

We have fun and well organized youth services currently run under the dynamic leadership of Mordechai Serraf.

In recent years with the appointment of Rabbi Osher and Sarah Feldman our Shul has introduced many wonderful initiatives such as the Friday Night Live and Super Shabbos programs that have seen tremendous success and are now being emulated throughout the world.

We also have regular Shiurim and learning opportunities for men and women and our new program ENGAJE - Gardens Adult Jewish Education, provides members of the community with enrichment and learning on a variety of topics.

All Jewish Holidays are celebrated with a special holiday spirit and exciting holidays programs and activities are arranged for all ages. Our Pesach Sedarim organized and catered by Cantor Ian and Helene Camissar and led by Rabbi Feldman continue to be extremely popular with the number of participants increasing every year.

Our dedicated office team, headed up by office manager Carmen Kay ensures that the Shul runs smoothly and professionally and they are always willing to be of assistance.

The Old with the New! - The 'Old' Shul, built in 1863 and now the entrance to the SA Jewish museum stands magnificently alongside the 'New' Great Synagogue built in 1905.
